8: GREAT NEW LOWER PRICE! Vintage 1983 PETER MAYHEW CHEWBACCA STAR WARS HANDWRITTEN PEN AUTOGRAPH. On the back side of a movie theatre "Pass Register" that was used at the usher's podium at the front door to log-in non-ticketed patrons. The page measures: 8-1/4" × 8-1/4" inches. This is from my personal collection of memorabilia while I was working at the theatre during this time as a manager and it has not been authenticated professionally as this is not a second-hand autograph that I questioned as it was done in front of me by Peter Mayhew when visiting the theatre.
In the summer of 1983, RETURN OF THE JEDI played in one of two theaters in the Santa Clara Valley and I managed one of them, the UA CINEMA 150 in Santa Clara, CA. It was the only theatre in CA with the D-150 lens and was one of the top grossing theaters for the film at the time. Unannounced, Peter Mayhew with some other people that he was traveling with, stopped in during a matinee showing while he was in the bay area doing other Star Wars related appointments between the Skywalker Ranch, SF, and SJ. The movie was already playing and I took him to the back of the theatre so he could watch it and the audience reaction as well as up to the projection room so he could see the D-150 lens and the projection system.Regardless of his size, he went unnoticed by anyone that happened to walk by us or see him during his visit. I was able to obtain this autograph while we said goodbye in the lobby.
Condition of the autograph is excellent while the condition of the paper is very good as you can tell by looking at it that there have been creases made in it and the paper shows visible aging as well. The edges and corners are still in great shape.
After showing the staff over the next few days after he signed it, I put it in a plastic file folder and it has basically been untouched stored away in my desk drawer and then later in a large envelope laid flat in storage for the good part of 39 years in a dry, smoke-free, odor-free environment.
